EDP to establish 5-MWp solar neighbourhood in Portugal – Renewables Now

Portuguese utility EDP (ELI:EDP) announced on Thursday it will install 5.1 MWp of solar panels on the roofs of the Lisbon International Fair (FIL), creating the largest solar neighbourhood in Portugal.

With more than 9,000 photovoltaic (PV) panels, the equipped buildings will become practically self-sufficient during the day and share the power generation with over 5,000 local families and businesses.

This new EDP Solar Neighbourhood is the result of a partnership between the AIP Foundation Group and EDP Comercial. It will cover an area of 44,000 sq m (473,612 sq ft) on the roofs of the four pavilions of the FIL.

Once up and running, the solar system is expected to produce around 6.8 GWh per year.

Since it began developing Solar Neighbourhoods in Portugal in 2020, EDP has contracted about 3,400 energy communities with customers, having the potential to add over 100 MWp of solar capacity, it said.
