Endesa installs 4.2 MWp of on-site solar for Catalan water utility – Renewables Now

Spanish utility Endesa SA (BME:ELE) has finalised the first phase of a 4.2-MWp solar self-consumption project for a water utility in the Catalonia region.

Endesa said on Tuesday that it has installed over 1,900 solar panels at the headquarters of the Tarragona city water utility Consorcio de Aguas de Tarragona (CAT). These panels, which were placed above water tanks, will provide 17.7% of the CAT’s energy consumption, generating 1,610 MWh of clean power annually.

The system will be come online in April.

The second phase will take place at the CAT’s drinking water treatment plant in L’Ampolla. Endesa has teamed up with a company called Solcam to begin the installation there.

Commissioning of the L’Ampolla solar array is expected during the fourth quarter of 2024.

Endesa was awarded this contract in a public tender. Under the terms, Endesa will finance the project, allowing the CAT to avoid any upfront investment costs. The overall investment in the installation of the two plants stands at EUR 5.6 million (USD 6.1 million).

The contract establishes a fixed price for the power produced by the self-consumption arrays. Apart from handling the construction, Endesa will also be in charge of operation and maintenance of the solar power systems for ten years.
