CABELL COUNTY, WV (WOWK) — Various Cabell County libraries are getting solar panels installed as part of a deal with solar energy installer and developer Solar Holler.

According to a release from Solar Holler, seven libraries in the county will receive 853 solar panels as a means to produce clean energy and save on energy costs.

“This project will have many long-term benefits for the Cabell County Public Library and the communities we serve. In addition to having more affordable power and being more energy efficient, going solar will save the library thousands of dollars yearly. We are excited to put that money back into the community through library resources and programming,” Executive Director of Cabell County Public Library Breana Roach Bowen said.

The new system is expected to produce around 434,782 kWh of energy per year.

The release said the agreement was made possible by the 2021 legalization of Power Purchase Agreements (PPA), which allows Solar Holler to own and manage the system over the “25 year lifetime of the PPA” while Cabell County Libraries pays for the energy generated “at a predetermined rate (10 – 20% lower than the rate they pay their utility).”

Solar Holler came to a similar agreement with Wayne County Schools back in November 2023.
