Canon’s protective coating to double life of bendable solar cells – Nikkei Asia

0 minutes, 23 seconds Read

TOKYO — Canon has developed a protective material that could double the life of bendable solar cells to between 20 and 30 years, in a boon to Japan’s push to commercialize the new technology.

The new material will be used to protect the light-harvesting perovskite layer, which deteriorates when exposed to humidity and heat. Applying a coating with a thickness between 100 and 200 nanometers is expected to reduce the need for maintenance and repairs, lowering the barriers to perovskite adoption.
