Carrefour and GreenYellow to install solar panels across stores in France – Yahoo Finance

Supermarket chain Carrefour has entered a partnership with GreenYellow, a major player in France’s energy transition, to fit solar panels at its stores across the country.

The collaboration will see photovoltaic power-generating equipment installed in 350 hypermarket and supermarket car parks.

The initiative, part of Carrefour’s 2026 strategy, supports its objective to produce 1 terawatt hour of solar power annually by 2027 in France, Spain and Brazil.

The partnership is also expected to significantly cut energy costs through self-consumption and help Carrefour reach its 2030 target of using 100% renewable energy.

GreenYellow will finance and manage the installation of the solar panels, which will also improve customer experience by providing shaded parking.

The project is anticipated to generate 450 gigawatt hours of electricity per year within three years – equivalent to the needs of a city of 200,000 people.

The energy produced will also fulfil 20% of the power requirements of Carrefour stores at competitive rates.

Any excess energy not stored will be fed back into the grid or used locally, creating additional income for Carrefour.

Carrefour CEO Alexandre Bompard said: “This partnership is a major milestone in our Carrefour 2026 plan, which places the fight against climate change as one of its key strategic objectives.

“We are thus accelerating the large-scale deployment of photovoltaic power plants in our stores to achieve our goal of using 100% renewable electricity by 2030. GreenYellow’s expertise will enable us to succeed in this major impact project, which is as virtuous for the ecological transition as it is for the value of our real estate assets.”

In July 2024 Carrefour secured a waiver from the French Competition Authority to finalise the acquisition of the Cora and Match banners in France.
