China’s solar PV installation capacity hits 216GW in 2023 – PV Tech

Source: National Energy Administration of China Centralised PV power stations and distributed PV systems saw an addition of 82.7GW and 44.9GW respectively throughout the year. Moreover, the growth of centralised solar PV installations surpassed distributed solar systems’ – a phenomenon that did not exist in previous years – due to plenty of large-scale solar projects connecting to the grid. Last year, centralised PV installation capacity reached approximately 119GW, higher than distributed solar PV installation’s record of about 96GW.

Solar is a team sport – pv magazine USA – pv magazine USA

Despite the infrequent failures and ‘thermal events’ that are verifiably caused by solar, the hundreds of thousands of solar ecosystem members globally suffer when an issue with a solar site gains media attention. In most cases, a sober root-cause analysis will uncover a relatively minor issue that started a cascade of other, more serious problems. However, most resulting mainstream media coverage and industry scuttlebutt oversimplifies or ignores the root cause entirely; that’s easier to write about, makes for better headlines, gets more clicks, and helps disperse blame. A similar thing…

NREL says long-term degradation of 8 GW of U.S. solar ‘matches expectations’ – pv magazine USA

The short-term impact of extreme weather, such as flooding, high winds, hail, wildfire and lightning, was minimal in most PV systems studied. January 29, 2024 Patrick Jowett From pv magazine global A research team from the U.S. Department of Energy’s NREL has reviewed the degradation of commercial and utility-scale PV sites from across the United States between 2008 and 2022. Their data set, thought to be the largest of its kind for such a project, consisted of data from 25,000 inverters across almost 2,500 commercial and utility-scale PV sites in 37…

How to combine residential heat pumps with PV, battery storage – pv magazine International

New research from Germany’s Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems (Fraunhofer ISE) has shown that combining rooftop PV systems with battery storage and heat pumps can improve heat pump efficiency while reducing reliance on grid electricity. January 29, 2024 Emiliano Bellini Fraunhofer ISE researchers have studied how residential rooftop PV systems could be combined with heat pumps and battery storage. They assessed the performance of a PV-heat pump-battery system based on a smart-grid (SG) ready control in a single-family house built in 1960 in Freiburg, Germany. “It was found that…

Pacific Energy delivers first hydrogen standalone power system – pv magazine International

Pacific Energy has deployed a first-of-a-kind containerized hydrogen electrolyzer and fuel cell as part of a tech development project that is exploring the feasibility of using hydrogen as a clean energy source and storage solution in northern Australia. January 29, 2024 David Carroll From pv magazine Australia Australia’s Pacific Energy has designed and delivered its first hydrogen standalone power system (H2 SPS) to serve as a platform to study the potential benefits of green hydrogen as an energy source, particularly for small regional and remote grids, which are common throughout…

NREL says long-term degradation of 8 GW of US solar ‘matches expectations’ – pv magazine International

Research by the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) on the degradation of almost 8 GW of US solar shows that PV systems are degrading at a modest rate, within expectations. It says most PV systems experience minimal damage from short-term extreme weather, but warns of the risk of powerful hail, wind and snow. January 29, 2024 Patrick Jowett A research team from the US Department of Energy’s NREL has reviewed the degradation of commercial and utility-scale PV sites from across the United States between 2008 and 2022. Are “Free Solar Panels” Really Free? – EnergySage Blog

You can’t get free solar panels from the government–but the government does offer many great incentives to make them more affordable. Most government incentives, like the Federal Solar Investment Tax Credit (ITC), go to the owner of the solar panel system. The main takeaway when considering a “no-cost” solar program or PPA is that you don’t own the solar panel system on your roof—the installer does.  Here are some of the best solar incentives the government offers right now:  Solar Investment Tax Credit If you’ve been on the fence about…
