Manchester City have submitted a planning application to install over 10 thousand solar panels at their Joie Stadium and training hub.

City will be following the likes of Ajax, Galatasaray and Plymouth Argyle with the installation in a bid to produce their own clean energy.

The panels would supply the club with up to 4.39 MWh of renewable energy every year, offsetting the annual power required to run the City Football Academy.

The club’s director of sustainability Pete Bradshaw said: “It is with great excitement that we can reveal our plans to completely offset the power required to run the day-to-day operations of the City Football Academy, by becoming one of football’s largest producers of self-supplied, renewable energy.

“We know that the production and consumption of renewable energy has an incredibly important role to play, which is why we are delighted at the prospect of installing over 10,800 solar panels at our home in Manchester.”

The plans are a first for a Premier League club and the number of panels and potential for power generations means it would be larger than the stadiums in Amsterdam or Istanbul. City believe it would make them one of the largest producers of renewable power in world football.

The planning permission is expected to be a formality and the club are optimistic that the installation could be approved and in place before the end of the year.

In 2019 Manchester City, who plan to be “net zero” by 2030, were joint top of the inaugural Premier League Sustainability table, published by Sport Positive and BBC Sport. These plans for energy production build on existing plans around water and plastic.

Bradshaw added: “Over many years, we have adopted increasingly sustainable practices across the club, ranging from the removal of all single-use plastic on a matchday to reusing rainwater and recycling more than 70% of our waste.”
