A solar array that could power close to 1,000 typical homes is coming to scrubland along the Merrimack River in Concord.
The project would involve more than 11,000 panels, capable of tracking the sun during the day, producing 4.58 megawatts AC. It would cover about 18 acres of a 75-acre parcel at 67 W. Portsmouth St., land owned by Brochu Nursery and Landscaping. The array would be owned by Unitil and the electricity produced would be fed into the grid.
The array will not require the field to be graded or altered, according to Ryan DaPonte of GZA Engineering, speaking before the Concord Planning Board. The panels will be spaced 9 feet apart and two transformers will be located on the site. It will be surrounded by a 7-foot-tall fence.
Oliver Sandreuter of Lodestar Energy, the Connecticut firm building the solar farm, said the property has proved unsuitable for use by Brochu for growing trees.
