Premier League champions Manchester City have confirmed staggering new plans to become one of the largest renewable energy producers in world football.

It is the latest development in consistent improvement plans made to the Etihad Stadium and the wider campus in the east Manchester region, as the club’s ownership continue to ensure that their footballing facilities remain at the top of the global game.

In contrast, such continuous developments are likely to prevent a situation similar to that of their cross-town rivals, as Manchester United’s new footballing leadership scramble to come up with plans to improve or entirely redevelop Old Trafford.

Manchester City’s latest venture is looking towards the future, and their hopes of making the entirety of the Etihad Campus self-sufficient when it comes to energy supply, through the form of solar energy production.

As announced by Manchester City in recent days, the Premier League champions aim to make its City Football Academy training base one of the ‘largest producers of renewable energy’ in world football.

The Etihad Stadium club are seeking planning approval from Manchester City Council for the installation of 10,887 solar panels, which will generate up to 4.39 MWh of renewable energy every year.

It is further detailed that the self-supplied energy will completely offset the City Football Academy’s annual usage, while the power will also be shared with the Etihad Stadium, forming a key part of the Club’s efforts to be carbon net zero by 2030.

Simultaneously, Manchester City are also continuing to redevelop and expand the Etihad Stadium itself, with ongoing construction work taking place around the North Stand or Family Stand to further increase the capacity.

Continued work around the Etihad Stadium will only further benefit the arena’s hopes of hosting the world’s biggest footballing events and concerts, with the stadium being a part of the UK and Ireland’s successful European Championships bid.
