MONTGOMERY, Ala. (WSFA) – Thousands of acres of farmland near the Snowdoun community in south Montgomery County could soon be turned into a site for solar energy, but not if some local residents have anything to do with it. A large crowd gathering to send one message to solar companies: we don’t want you here.
“I’m going to be looking out my window, on my front porch, in a place that I bought literally to die on, saved up all my life to buy this land, and now I’m going to be looking across the road at solar panels for the rest of my life,” said landowner Randy Gainey.
Mathew Mcclellan says he faced a similar problem in Covington County and was able to help stop the effort.
“They’re not even from America. They don’t really have any interest for us. This is not about our interests. It’s about theirs,” Mcclellan said.
McClellan also expressed to the crowd that the project is only in its first phase, and there is still time to stop it.
Many residents are concerned about their property values, as well as environmental concerns.
County Commission Chairman Doug Singleton told the crowd that the commission has limited power in this development, but said he agrees with their concerns.
“I’m against it 100%. 100% against it,” Singleton said. “I cannot stop it, but I’m definitely against it.”
The development is expected to be brought up at the next county commission meeting, which is scheduled for 9 a.m. June 18.
