FRANKLIN, NJ — Solar panels caught fire on top of a business in Franklin Township prompting a large response from emergency responders on Wednesday.

On July 10 at 5:08 p.m., the Franklin Township Police Department and firefighters went to a Cozzoli Machine Company on School House Road near Randolph Road after multiple calls reported black smoke coming from the roof of the manufacturing facility.

Police and firefighters arrived to see heavy smoke and find the solar panels on the roof of the structure on fire spreading rapidly, said Millstone Valley Fire Department.

The fire was upgraded to a second alarm due to conditions deteriorating from strong winds.

Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire and ventilate the building before leaving at 8:30 p.m.

“Solid work from all companies on scene keeping this fire in check despite fighting strong winds and extreme heat,” said Millstone Valley Fire Department.

No one was reported inside of the building at the time of the fire and no injuries were reported, said Franklin Police Lt. Vincent Wilson.

The cause and origin of the fire are under investigation by the Franklin Township Office of Fire Prevention. An initial investigation indicates the fire does not appear to be suspicious.
