AMARILLO, Texas (KFDA) – After a year of planning, Street Toyota has begun construction at its dealership for new solar panels.
“Toyota has been building hybrids for about 27 years, so they’re really about reducing the carbon footprint of the world from their vehicles and from their dealerships. So we just thought this was a great time to put up solar panels,” said Cory Dupriest, general manager at Street Toyota.
There will be 840 solar panels placed on top of the dealership and each panel is bifacial, which will absorb power on both sides.
“Right now we use about a little over a million kilowatthours (kWh) of electricity here and this should produce about 700,000 kWh, so it’ll cut our electric bill and emissions about 70%,” said Dupriest.
There will be a monitor in front of the showroom that will show how much energy is being produced and used for the day, week or year.
Dupriest says the solar panels will reduce the carbon footprint about 450 metric tons per year.
The project is about a million dollars and is funded by the dealership and rebates from the government to help offset the cost.
The solar panels will last up to 30 years or longer. The project is set to be fully operational by the end of July.
