SIOUX CITY, Iowa (KCAU) — The topic of utility-scale solar energy systems came before the Woodbury County Board of Supervisors again on Tuesday.

Supervisors finalized and approved changes to the county’s zoning regulations for this type of commercial system. The new section includes regulations for the conditional use permitting of this type of solar system.

Tuesday’s unanimous vote by the board came five months after the county zoning commission started the process of making changes in the ordinance.

“There will not be large-scale commercial solar projects, and we think that fits well with the rural footprint and identity of Woodbury County,” chairman Matthew Ung said. “Our citizens and residents have certainly prioritized the way of life of the rural areas, and whether that’s the landscape or production of crops, those are things we are really focused on and we’re proud to reflect that.”

Today’s changes follow several public meetings and hearings on the issue.
