Michigan energy provider Consumers Energy will build its first large-scale solar project under a partnership with the Muskegon County Resource Recovery Centre.

The 250-MW Muskegon Solar Energy Centre will break ground in April and be fully operational in 2026. The solar park is expected to be able to power about 40,000 homes.

The project supports Consumers Energy’s goal of adding 8,000 MW of solar energy by 2040.

The solar system will be located on about 1,900 acres of land within the footprint of the Resource Recovery Centre, a wastewater treatment facility, in partnership with Moorland Township. Consumers Energy will lease the land and will own and operate the project.

“This solar farm fulfills the vision of the Muskegon County Commissioners,” said Dave Johnson, director of the Resource Recovery Centre. “It will benefit the users of the Muskegon County wastewater system as well as Moorland Township and the Ravenna School District,” added Johnson.
