Discount retail chain Ocean State Job Lot is adding rooftop solar panels to 14 of its stores across the Northeast, including one in New Jersey.

In an April 17 announcement, the Rhode Island-based company said it will install 1,712 panels with 933.2-kilowatts capacity over the next year at its Princeton location.

Plans also call for solar projects at seven stores in Connecticut, six in Massachusetts and one in Rhode Island, as well as at corporate headquarters.

The upcoming work will be done in partnership with Ecogy Energy in Brooklyn and NextGrid in Boston. It expands the chain’s rooftop solar portfolio. Since 2022, Ocean State Job Lot has completed arrays at three stores in Rhode Island – Woonsocket, Johnston and Richmond.

Wayne MacLeod is senior director of property development at Ocean State Job Lot. He noted the company’s increased commitment “to reducing our impact on the environment.”

“We are thrilled to announce this next phase of our solar energy commitment, which brings us closer to meeting our long-term goal of being a Net Zero company in waste, energy and emissions,” he said.

In 2022 and 2023, the Business Intelligence Group recognized the chain for its eco-friendly practices with sustainability leadership awards.

Founded in 1977, Ocean State Job Lot sells an ever-changing array of brand-name, first-quality merchandise at closeout prices, such as household goods, apparel, pet supplies, seasonal products, kitchen pantry staples and specialty foods. Considered the Northeast’s largest, privately held discount retailer, Ocean State Job Lot has more than 150 stores across the region, employs 5,600 associates and generates annual sales exceeding $800 million, the company said.

Within New Jersey, Ocean State Job Lot has stores in Freehold, Clinton, Deptford, Franklin Park, Princeton, South Plainfield and Sparta. A location is also coming this fall in Holmdel.
