Sheep grazing helps maintain grass at Duluth solar field – Northern News Now
DULUTH, Minn. (Northern News Now) – About 100 sheep visited Duluth as a new approach to maintaining the grass at a solar garden.
Minnesota Native Landscapes (MNL) is partnering with Minnesota Power to help clean up the vegetation and grass in the Jean Duluth Solar Field.
On Monday, MNL brought the sheep to the solar field where they will graze around the panels for the next three weeks.
This process not only helps reduce fossil fuels by not using a lawnmower, but the sheep themselves impact the carbon in the soil.
“The sheep with their fertilizers and the way they eat the grass, they’re not only saving you carbon admissions, they’re also putting that back into the soil,” said MNL Grazing Manager, Jodee Nohner.
Carrie Ryan, enterprise project manager for Minnesota Power, says that the company is excited to try this eco-friendly method out.
“If it’s successful, we’d like to implement it at our other solar sites,” Ryan said. “It’s just an example of sustainability in action.”
