State Minister for Disaster Management and Relief Md Mohibur Rahman emphasized the need for power supply, particularly during disasters or cyclones, in shelters to ensure lighting and electricity.

Acknowledging the vulnerability of shelters without a reliable power source, he announced plans to install solar power systems in all cyclone and disaster shelters across the country.

The initiative aims to enhance safety, lighting, and communication capabilities in these shelters.

During a discussion on the challenges, prospects, and other development projects, including government mega-projects in Patuakhali district on Thursday, local public representatives and government officials pledged cooperation to make disaster management more efficient in the district, considering the risks of disasters and climate change.

Speaking as the chief guest in the discussion and exchange of views on disaster management and development in Patuakhali, the state minister also shared plans to build 400-500 new Mujib Killas in coastal areas.

“These forts will be repurposed by connecting them with nearby educational institutions, making them versatile for use during environmental emergencies,” he added.

The state minister highlighted the importance of a joint development plan for the overall development of the district, urging all government departments to submit development plans, identify problems, explore possibilities, and provide recommendations to the deputy commissioner’s office within the month.

Acting Deputy Commissioner Obaidur Rahman presided over the event, with guests including President of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Ministry of Disaster Management and Relief ASM Feroze, and Member of Parliament for Patuakhali-1 Constituency and Co-Chairman of Jatiya Party ABM Ruhul Amin Howlader.

Other attendees included district police superintendent Saidul Islam, Zilla Parishad Chairman Advocate Hafizur Rahman, and various government officials and representatives from social and professional organizations.
