Spanish airport operator Aena SME SA (BME:AENA) has secured consent to install a 4.99-MW solar array at its Zaragoza airport in Spain’s region of Aragon, a regional authority has announced.

The plant will feature 9,920 Risen Energy photovoltaic modules installed on fixed bipost structures anchored to the ground. The modules will be grouped in strings of 32 and generate electricity that is fed to 27 inverters of 185 kW made by Growatt, the regional energy authority said in its resolution published in Aragon’s official gazette last week.

Aena has up to a year to apply for a construction permit. If it misses the deadline without seeking its extension under justified reasons, the consent will expire, the resolution stated.

The approval for the Zaragoza project comes just days after Aena awarded contracts for the installation of solar plants at its El Prat and Reus airports in Barcelona to be able to generate 12.5 MWp and 15 MWp, respectively, for self-consumption.

In 2022, a contractor was selected to install 120 MW of solar panels for the Adolfo Suarez Madrid-Barajas airport.
