Grenzebach announced it sold 280 solar glass line systems in four years thanks to a collaboration between sites in China and Germany. Company officials say the push into solar energy came as the Chinese government began promoting renewable energies throughout the 2000s.

China’s move caused manufacturers to expand their production capabilities, including Grenzebach, which installed its first two solar glass production systems in 2008 in the Chinese province of Guangdong. In 2020, it updated its portfolio of patterned glass systems.

“We set out to optimize our production facilities for patterned glass so that we could meet the needs of our customers and fulfill the requirements that are placed on solar glass,” says Markus Gruber, senior vice president of Grenzebach’s glass business unit. “Every aspect of the technology is designed with output and cost efficiency in mind, as well as the specific requirements of the Chinese solar glass market.”

Grenzebach’s success in China and technological prowess in Germany enabled it to tailor its offerings to meet customer requirements. One such move is the push for thinner glass and larger lites.

Grenzebach responded to the need for lighter and thinner glass by facilitating glass thicknesses of just 1.5 to 6 mm. Officials say panel sizes range from 1,200 by 2,400 mm to 2,650 by 2,800 mm—matched to the dimensions of Chinese solar panels. The capacity of one line usually varies between 125 and 300 metric tons daily.
